Some things change the way we
live and breathe at home. At first glance, a living room rug is just a simple
decorative element. And yet, when it is carefully thought out, respectfully
woven, and charged with meaning, it becomes much more than that. At Nunamae, we
believe that a rug can tell a story - your story, our story, and the story of a
gentler world.
It all begins in northern
Portugal, where craftsmen dance their hands on wooden looms, perpetuating
ancient skills with tenderness and precision. Each carpet we create is a unique
piece, woven slowly, without haste. No mass production here, no frantic pace.
Just the calm of the mastered gesture, and the beauty of the transformed
material.
But what makes our living room
rugs so special is what they are not. They are not made from new fibres from a
voracious industry. They are not the product of a fast, impersonal and
polluting system. No. They were born from what would otherwise have been thrown
away: cotton scraps, carefully recovered in Portuguese textile workshops. These
scraps, which many people ignore, become the thread that binds us together in a
new creation. An act of resilience, of rebirth, almost poetic.
In a living room, a rug marks a
presence. It welcomes bare feet in the morning, children's games and evening
confidences. It absorbs silence and laughter and gives a soul to the space.
When it's made from recycled cotton, when it carries within it the memory of
other fabrics, it becomes even more alive. It becomes a discreet witness to
your everyday life, while carrying with it a promise: to respect what surrounds
us.
And because we want beauty to
be accessible, without compromise, our rugs are also designed to last. Their
natural softness is combined with surprising strength. They're easy to wash,
and adapt to the seasons and moods. They are lightweight and discreetly
elegant. Never garish, always just right.
Choosing a Nunamae living room
rug is much more than an aesthetic choice. It's a way of living, of slowing
down, of restoring value to the handmade, to proximity, to intention. It's
about rejecting the disposable, the soulless, in favour of the real thing. It's
about bringing a little of that warmth to your home that can't be bought off
the shelf.
Our rugs tell the story of
yesterday's actions, today's commitments, and the hope of a more respectful
tomorrow. They're not there to follow a trend, but to create meaning, to
accompany you for a long time, in all simplicity.
So when you walk on them,
barefoot, you might feel something different. That mix of gentleness and
conviction, that tenderness woven into every line. And you'll know that you've
made a beautiful, good and right choice.
1. What is an eco-responsible
Nunamae rug?
A Nunamae eco-responsible
lounge rug is made from natural or recycled materials such as regenerated
cotton or cotton-jute blends. By reusing existing fibres, we avoid the
production of virgin cotton, thus saving thousands of litres of water and a lot
of energy related to the cultivation, bleaching and industrial processing of
new cotton.
2. What materials are used in
living room carpets?
- Recycled cotton: soft,
lightweight, machine washable at 30°C.
- Cotton-jute blend: robust,
natural, not machine washable.
- Natural wool: warm and dense,
for a more textured feel (dry cleaning recommended).
3. Are all carpets
machine-washable?
No. Only 100% recycled cotton
rugs can be machine-washed at 30°C. Jute and wool carpets should not be
immersed in water: dry cleaning or vacuuming is recommended.
4. How long do recycled cotton
carpets last?
Thanks to the quality of the
recycled fibres and the dense weave, our carpets are designed to last for many
years, even with frequent washing. They retain their colour and shape while
remaining soft to the touch.
5. Are the rugs suitable for
homes with children or pets?
Yes, especially recycled cotton
carpets, which are :
- hypoallergenic
- easy to wash
- Soft and supple, yet resistant to everyday use.
8. What is the real
environmental impact of a Nunamae rug?
By choosing a Nunamae
eco-responsible lounge mat, you :
- save thousands of litres of
water (no need to grow new cotton)
- reduce energy consumption
linked to traditional industrial processes
- support local production in
Portugal, respecting craftsmanship and the circular economy
